On July 4, Steel Your Nerves

As our country celebrates the Declaration of Independence and the war we fought to defend that independence, let us steel our nerves.

Thomas Jefferson said: "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." We are approaching that time once again. Barring a miracle, patriots will be fighting a civil war, seceding from the union, or fleeing the country within the next two generations.

Don't miss this: we already live under a tyranny far worse than the Stamp Act. The Founding Fathers would have already started a war in response to the arbitrary power being exercised every single day in Washington. The Executive Branch is a functional monarchy, trumped only by the occasional protestations of the Nine Kings in Black Robes.

The lesson of Trump's victory is that the majority of the Republican party does not believe America can be saved by going back to the Constitution. They believe that tyranny is inevitable, so we might as well have a friendly tyrant. They might very well be right about that. John Adams said: "Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." It is undeniable that we no longer have a moral and religious people, and, as William Penn would say, since we will not be ruled by God, we will be ruled by tyrants.

It is at this point in the conversation where the temptation to despair is strongest, especially because it is obvious that things will get far worse for America before they get better (if they get better at all). But as dark as things appear, we have no reason to fear.

If you would have any hope of being happy in the Lord, you must recognize that we aren’t promised anything. There are no guarantees. The worst might happen. For America, this might mean Soviet-style communism, or being overrun by the hordes of ISIS.

We aren’t promised anything.

But once you’ve realized that, there’s freedom. There is tremendous liberty in the recognition that you can boldly throw yourself into the battle with reckless abandon. You can fearlessly tell others of the truth of God’s Word. In 2016, there is only one way to be truly counter-cultural: being a disciple of Jesus Christ, and learning to obey all that He has commanded you. Do it. You can abandon all caution in raising your children to be freaks of nature in the eyes of the world. You can live like an alien—because that is exactly what you are. You can live like you don’t have anything to lose.

Because you don’t.
